Love letter from Pedro de Lanuza to Cervantes' niece, 16th century
Measurements with frame 50 x 80 cm. At that time we see the niece (of Cervantes) Constanza de Figueroa in love with Pedro de Lanuza y de Perellós, second brother of the unfortunate Juan de Lanuza, Justicia de Aragón, beheaded in Zaragoza in the year 1591. They were both children of Juan de Lanuza, Viscount of Rueda and Perellós, - IV Justicia de Aragón -, and Catalina de Urrea y Toledo, Viscounts of Rueda and Perellós, and their paternal grandparents were Juan de Lanuza, III Justicia de Aragón and Beatriz Despés, natives of Zaragoza. But a year or two later, perhaps well into 1595, Pedro treated Cervantes' niece and between them began what they then called: "loving conversation." apparently of the same order as that of her mother Andrea de ella with her father Nicolás de Ovando, and that of her aunt Magdalena de ella with Alonso de Pacheco. From the documents it is inferred that there was a marriage promise, or, at least, this illusion was created by Constanza. But, Pedro proceeded with Constanza like Magdalena, that is, abandoning her, after granting her the usual deed of indemnity or compensation. Yet another love failure, which seems to be the fate of all the women in the Cervantes family. In fact, on July 5, 1595 and before the notary Alonso de Prada, Pedro Lanuza was obliged to pay Constanza de Figueroa 1,400 ducats. But since he had no money then, he entertained her mocked lover with promises until she improved her situation. Or, if the deed was made as a result of the love affair, Constanza was immediately disappointed, and she trusted in the quick return of her assets. On December 3, the new commander granted free and full power to Constanza de Figueroa, "daughter of Nicolás de Ovando, deceased", so that in her name she could collect from the administrators, lessors and collectors of the royal income of the silks of Granada 1,400 ducats of 11 reales from the income of its encomienda.
