"Abstract Composition", Antoni Clavé, mixed technique on canvas
Framed measures: 60 x 46, canvas measures: 33.5 x 20 cm. Measures Barcelona, Spain, 1913 – Saint-Tropez, France, 2005. Having trained in the Llotja de Barcelona with Fèlix Mestres, Josep Mongrell and Ángel Ferrant, at the end of the Civil War he went into exile in France, where he lived until his death, first in Perpignan, then in Paris and Saint Tropez; from there he gained wide international recognition. Painter, engraver and sculptor, he was associated with the so-called School of Paris, along with Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, Joan Miró and Antonio Saura. Although initially his work was more graphic and also scenographic, from the beginning of the fifties he devoted himself to painting. He went through an intimate realism, through expressionism and symbolism, until he settled on informalism and experimental abstraction. The most characteristic of his production since 1975 were the backgrounds that simulate folded and superimposed papers, represented in trompe l'oeil, and what he called papier froissé, which incorporated the spray on crumpled paper. He was one of the contemporary Catalan artists with the greatest international presence, with exhibitions and awards, such as the UNESCO prize at the Venice Biennale in 1956. Among his retrospectives, those presented at the Musée national d'art moderne in Paris (1978) stand out. ), the Spanish Pavilion at the Venice Biennale (1984) and the Can Framis space of the Fundació Vila Casas (2013).
