"Deux Amies I & II" pair of watercolors by Walasse Ting (1929 - 2010), Chinese contemporary school of the 20th century
Provenance: Fernando Alcolea Gallery, exhibited: Expo Ting 88. Ink and watercolor on paper. Measurements: 15.5 x 21 cm each. He was born in Shanghai in 1929. He left China in 1946 and lived for a time in Hong Kong. He then moved to Paris in 1952. There he met artists like Karel Appel, Asger Jorn and Pierre Alechinsky, members of the avant-garde group, CoBrA. He then moved to New York, United States, where he drew inspiration for his art from Pop Art and Abstract Expressionism. He started out as an abstract artist, but most of his work since the mid-1970s has been called popular figurative art. They are works of large areas of color painted with acrylic colors. He lived in Amsterdam in the 90s, but moved several times between Amsterdam and New York. He also winner of the Guggenheim Fellowship Award (for drawing) in 1970. His works can be seen in the collections of several museums, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Art Institute of Chicago; Tate Modern, London; Pompidou Center, Paris and the Hong Kong Museum of Art. Sometimes his Chinese name “丁雄泉” is used or one of his translations is used: Ding Xiongquan or Ting Hsiung-ch'uan. Walasse Ting passed away in New York on May 17, 2010 at the age of 80.
