Pair of oil paintings on canvas. Measurements: 114 x 93, framed measurements (each): 126 x 106 cm. Andrés Cortés y Aguilar (Seville, December 24, 1812 - ibid., May 16, 1879) was a Spanish painter representing romantic landscaping and Andalusian costumbrismo, member of an important saga of painters of the Sevillian school. He belonged to a family of artists that began with his uncle Joaquín Cortés (1776-1835) and which also included his brother Antonio Cortés y Aguilar who started the French branch, and his children: André, Jeanne Marie and Édouard Cortès . Trained at the Royal School of the Three Noble Arts in Seville, he painted landscapes and traditional scenes from Seville and Granada, although he also painted portraits and still lifes. His work is known The Seville Fair held in 1856, that shows the appearance of the primitive April Fair when it was a cattle fair. There are three versions of it, in the Seville City Hall, the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum and in a private collection. He also has work in the Romantic Museum in Madrid, the Bellver Collection in Seville and the Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum (Málaga). In the Cathedral of Segorbe there is a "San Fernando Rey" signed and dated by the author ("Andrés Cortés 1851"), a gift from Domingo Canubio and Alberto, Bishop of Segorbe (1848-1864), to the Seo.
