View of the Marina, Rafael Verdugo Landi (Málaga, 1871 – Madrid, 1930), Spanish school of the 19th century
Oil on canvas, canvas measures: 60 x 28, framed measures: 81 x 69 cm. Ricardo Verdugo Landi is one of the most notable seamen of the Malaga school, a disciple of Emilio Ocón and one of the best followers of his style and teaching. In his works, the identification of the sea as the absolute protagonist of the composition stands out, making these scenes studies of its variability: waves, sunsets, rough seas, calm, showing a whole narrative sense with the profusion of waves and breakers, in which is close to an impressionist-type brushstroke. In addition to his recognized teaching as a painter of seascapes, there is another perhaps more unknown facet in Verdugo Landi's biography, that of graphic journalist and editor. In 1892 he presented his work Landing at the Madrid International Exhibition, which commemorated the IV Centenary of the Discovery of America, for which he received an honorable mention. From that same year is the work Marina (Museo del Prado, Ciudad Real Museum Deposit) That same year he donated the work Asking for help to the Municipal Museum of Malaga. Two years later, in 1896, he returned to Malaga, occupying the position of curator of the Municipal Museum, a position he selflessly held. Meanwhile, he continues to participate in national exhibitions, sending a large marine, Shipwreck. In 1897 he resigned from the post of curator of the Municipal Museum. In 1899 he sends another work Oleaje with which he won a third medal at the National Exhibition in Madrid, and the same award in 1906 for Alta mar (Prado Museum, Ministry of Labor Deposit).
