Oil on board, board measurements: 34 x 26, framed measurements: 46 x 37 cm. (Zarzalejo, Madrid, 1834-Madrid, 1896). Spanish painter and Director of the Prado Museum from 1894 to 1896. The son of an Italian lithographer, the painter from Madrid trained at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de la Academia de San Fernando from 1848. From then on, married and already established at court, without much success, he made some history paintings, such as The Battle of Tetuán (Army Museum, Madrid) or The executions of the third of May on the mountain of Príncipe Pío (Madrid City Hall) of an imposted drama, with the who gets his third first class medal, and the following year, in 1872, he is appointed academician of San Fernando. Since 1873 Palmaroli settles in Paris, and there he developed his facet as a painter of tableautins to a great extent for ten years, at the end of which he was called to Rome as director of the Spanish Academy. In the Eternal City he continues with the same genre of anecdotal inspiration, of which some of the works preserved in the Prado Museum are an exceptional example, such as The Concert or Confession.
