Rare Pair of Spanish Neoclassical Trumeaus depicting orgiastric scenes from the Tower of Nesle, Spanish school, Carlos IV period, 18th century
In carved and gilt wood with two hand-painted crystals depicting scenes from the so-called "Scandal of the Tower of Nesle" where several members of the French royal family were accused of adultery in 1314. Apparently, the accusations came from Philip's only daughter IV, Elizabeth. The tower of the Palais de Nesle in Paris is where the events are believed to have taken place. This scandal led to the arrest, torture, execution and imprisonment of several people, and had serious consequences for the Capetian dynasty in its last years. Measurements: 195 x 92 x 20 each
