"Carnival Scene", signed Baldomero Ressendi, 20th century Madrid school
Oil on cardboard as part of a series. He trained at the School of Fine Arts in Seville, where he stood out for his great talent for painting, although he was considered by some of his teachers to be extravagant due to his tendency to get out of conventional classical molds. . He coincided during his formative stage in Seville with the native painter from Marchena Eufemiano Sánchez, with whom he maintained a great friendship throughout his life. From 1946 he gained fame as a scandalous painter, some of his works were considered by the religious authority to be obscene and disrespectful of morals, although he always enjoyed protectors and friends in the high political and economic spheres who protected him until the end. of their life. His style can be framed within expressionism. Among his main works can be noted: The parlor of San Bernardo, The temptations of San Jerónimo, The Eighth Circle or The Burial of Christ.123 Ressendi's work is characterized by being very expressive and reflecting the non-opulent side of the things he painted. It is said that he was invited to paint Francisco Franco, and after showing up the first day, he never came back, leaving the dictator standing.
