Pope Saint Sylvester Taming the Dragon, 17th century Italian school
Oil on canvas. Saint Sylvester was one of the first popes of Rome, living at the same time as Emperor Constantine, who converted to Christianity. The feat of San Silvestre is exemplified by Christian mythology as the hero of God capable of defeating the monstrous serpent; Similar stories are told in the Legenda Aurea of San Felipe, Santos Simón y Judas, San Mateo, San Jorge, Santa Margarita and Santa Marta. The basic story of the "dragon slayer" is one that Christianity shares with many other traditions as well, such as that of the Greek god Apollo slaying the Python.
