Virgin with Child in Arms, Possibly Puerto Rican Colonial School of the 18th Century, Circle of José de Campeche y Jordán
Oil on canvas, framed measurements: 48 X 36 cm, canvas measurements: 42 X 30 cm. Painter and musician. At an early age he learned the family craft trades from him. He was studying Latin and philosophy at the Royal Convent of the Dominican Fathers. Between 1776 and 1778 he was related to the Spanish court painter Luis Paret y Alcázar, who arrived on the island exiled by King Carlos III. He was a self-taught and multifaceted artist. He cultivated music, architecture, topography, shield design and the development of musical instruments. He mainly developed religious-themed paintings and portraits. His work, considered rococo due to its interest in detail and ornamentation, dominates the palette of bluish grays and pinks that he assimilated from Paret. In 2006 the Ponce Art Museum organized an exhibition that traveled to the prestigious Worcester Art Museum in Massachusetts and included works by him, Francisco Oller and Miguel Pou. Campeche's great mastery resides in his mastery of portraits and miniatures, a characteristic that exalts him as one of the most outstanding painters in Latin America at the end of the 18th century.
