בראשית שנות הששים של המאה הי"ט החל לסייר את הקווקז ומשם בארצות אסיה המרכזית, בחפשו בכל מקום עקבות (ממשיים ומדומים) של יהודים. החל לפרסם רשמי מסעיו בעיתונות העברית ("המבשר" ו"המגיד"), שעוררו הדים מרובים, וחכמי ישראל באירופה (בהם שד"ל) החלו פונים אליו בשאלות על יהודים בארצות רחוקות ונידחות אלה.
