Genoese school of the seventeenth century. Sibyl. Sculpture in carved, polychrome and gilded wood. Depicted seated headdress and an open book. Since the Renaissance, the Western Church accepted the word of twelve such sibyls as predictions of the coming of Christ. As a result, the sibyls came to be regarded as the pagan female equivalents of the Old Testament prophets and were often depicted with a book or stone tablet. 123 x 83 x 40 cm.
