"Our Lady of Guadalupe with the apparitions and Juan Diego Cuāuhtlahtoātzin"
Oil on canvas. Relined. Carved, polychromed and gilded period wooden frame. 98 x 76 cm. Frame measurements: 120 x 95 cm.
Imposing depiction of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which includes the apparitions and the Chichimec Juan Diego, which rises up from an eagle.
There is a handwritten inscription in Latin "Non fecit taliter omni nationi" on the painting: (God has done nothing like it for any other nation) in reference to the words pronounced by Pope Benedict XIV when he was presented with the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe and, admiring its beauty, approved of the works of art depicting the patron of Guadalupe in Mexico.
"A d Bocion de Dn Juan seacaboeste Lien..." is handwritten in the lower margin. The inscription is incomplete. It would have continued beneath but the canvas has been cut. It is logical to conclude that it would have been dated and could have been signed.
