"Bodisattva de Pie" en madera tallada y policromada, China Dinastía Ming (1368-1644)
"Standing Bodhisattva" in carved and polychrome wood, China Ming Dynasty (1368-1644)
The left hand is missing the fingers but because of the position it could be performing the Karana mudra in which the index and little fingers are stretched upwards and the others are bent towards the palm. It is a mudra that protects from evil and drives away demons and bad energies. She wears a headdress and jewelry as well as fine fabrics whose ends dangle gracefully and rests on a rocky surface.
The bodhisattva Avalokitesvara in China is known as Guanyin and she is the goddess of mercy. The word bodhisattva means beings of enlightenment, who have earned to leave the earthly world of suffering but who have given up reaching Nirvana for their promise to save all of God's children.
