Juan de Mesa Velasco (Córdoba 1583-Sevilla 1627) "Niño Jesús" Escultura exenta, tallada y encarnada a pulimento.
Juan de Mesa Velasco (Cordoba 1583-Seville 1627)
"Child Jesus"
Exempt sculpture, carved and incarnated with polish.
Representative Jesus Niño standing, who places his feet on a cushion covered by a golden cord.
The carving with a slight sway shows a particular adherence "to nature", evident in the softness of the meat and in the making of the hair, with curly locks that rise in a frontal tuft, according to the style of the Cordovan sculptor himself.
The iconographic typology of the exempt Child Jesus, in Andalusian sculpture, was initiated by the sculptor Jerónimo Hernández de la Estrada for the Brotherhood of the Fifth Angustia of Seville h. 1582. In 1606 Matínez Montañes made one for the Sacramental of the Tabernacle of Seville Cathedral, which is the one that achieved the greatest fame and was followed by many sculptors. Along these lines is this one, made by Mesa, who was a disciple of Martínez Montañes.
With carved, polychrome and gilt wood base.
Height: 60cm
Base: 89 cm
Study of the Doctor in Art History José Angel Rivera de las Heras is attached.
