The Hopi belong to the Western Pueblo Indian group. The Kachina are elements of the mythology of these peoples and in Hopi, the word means "bearer of life". These dolls are given to uninitiated girls during the Bean Dance, during the Bean Planting Ceremony in spring, and during the Home Dance in summer. Their function is to familiarize children with the kachinas as well as to educate them on the things of life.
