Virgen romanista Navarra S. XVI
"Virgin" of wood carved in its color, Romanist School, Navarra S. XVI.
With an elegant hairstyle and veil, she has a relief on her head, probably to place a crown on it, and wears a tunic with thick, rounded folds.
It could be a work close to the Navarrese sculptor Juan Bazcardo (1584-1653) who has a Romanist aesthetic learned from his teacher Pedro González de San Pedro, who was a disciple of Juan de Anchieta, introducer of Romanism in Navarre, especially early in his career. Later, it will take baroque elements introduced by Gregorio Fenández, approaching the Valladolid School with more angular and broken folds and more realistic, calm and sweet facial expressions.
The great deterioration of the polychromy that the carving presented at the time of its acquisition by the current owner forced it to be removed and leave the wood in its original colour.
Provenance: Izu Urmeneta Palace in Pamplona, current College of Physicians of Navarra; Private collection of Pamplona.
Height: 110 cm.
