Horizontal sundial in silver-plated brass designed by Julien Le Roy (1686-1759) and made by Jacques Le Maire (1714-1762), France h. 1735-45.
Dial with inscription "Invente by Julien Le Roy Ancen Directeurs de la Societé des Arts" "Fait par Jacques Le Meire de la Societé des Arts et Genie"
Large and heavy gnomon placed at 49 degrees from the dial, scale latitudes 38-60 degrees, four leveling screws that allow the entire dial to tilt to serve latitudes 43-55 degrees north, hour scale on dial divided into five-minute intervals; latitude table of 20 European cities, three linear scales.
Includes olive root box with rivets and silver-plated brass handle. Velvet lined interior.
Julien Le Roy was the best French watchmaker of the first half of the 18th century and Jacques Le Maire was a great master craftsman specializing in instruments.
A similar clock is exhibited in the British Museum in London.
