Gilded brass universal equinoctial sundial, Dollond, London S. XIX.

This universal ring size time by simultaneously adjusting latitude (position) and solar declination (day of the year). Its arrangement is reminiscent of that of the armillary sphere. It is made up of two orthogonal circular frames, which in some models fold and a ring to suspend it and orient it to the sun.
The gnomon is parallel to the earth's axis of rotation pointing to the north pole (or to the south pole if it is built in the southern zone). It is arranged in such a way that the hours represented on the hour scale are equal or equinoctial. The diurnal arc in equatorial coordinates is divided into an arc of 15º to complete the 365º of the great circle.
The Dollond firm of London were well known opticians and scientific instrument makers who were established in 1750 and have now been taken over by Boots Opticians.
