Triangulation element by Christoph Trechler, Germany 1617.
Made of gilt brass and steel with inscription "Christoff Tressler der Elter Mechanicus Anno 1617". This instrument with semicircular degree scales was devised for field surveying.
One of the arms can be moved in a semicircle, recording with the scale of degrees. On each arm there is a graduated scale with crossbars on which a sight can be slid. There is a third fixed view in the joint. On the reverse of the arms is a scale marked "Linea Recta Divisio". This instrument should be compared with the one described by Leonard Zubler in his book "Triangulation as a Measurement Technique", 1607 where this Swiss goldsmith who made some topographical instruments, gives an overview of triangulation in the military field.
