Carved jade ‘Three Treasures’ pendant, Han dynasty
A light-hued jade pendant carved in the shape of the three Han treasures. It consists first of ‘翁仲’ in the form of an old man with a tubular body and an elongated face, followed by ‘刚印’ a ‘施南佩’ a rectangular-shaped amulet with a perforated interior, decorated with incised characters on its four sides, and finally ‘施南佩’, a figure composed of two rectangular bodies with a curved profile crowned by a sinuous ‘S’-shaped hitch. These three symbols used together were used as elements of protection from evil spirits. Han Dynasty (206 BC - AD 220) or later.
