White jade "lion" figurine, Eastern Han dynasty
Figure of a protective lion, made of white jade. The lion is lying down with its body curled up and its head biting its tail. During the Han dynasty a sculptural tradition emerged with greater interest in the representation of fabulous animals and beasts in durable materials such as jade. Inspired by Taoist philosophy, which began to spread among the upper echelons, who sought immortality. Monumental stone sculptures of animals and their small jade counterparts were found in the tombs. It is believed that they fulfilled the function of protecting their owner and opening the way to paradise. In good condition with wear or patina.
