Agate snuff bottle "Crab", Qing dynasty, Qianlong
A snuff bottle carved from a single piece of agate. The profile of the body is in the shape of a gourd-shaped vase with the lid at the top. On the belly, coinciding with the different shades of agate, is a crab holding a carved flower. The quality of the carving and the fineness of the forms are exceptional, as is the tonality. It is in very good condition.
Heilongjiang agate is found in the northwest of the province. This carbon dioxide mineral is of gem grade and is a variant of chalcedony. Agate from this region has beautiful and warm colours, rich colours and a hard texture, very useful for carved crafts. This product was used as a tribute in the Qing dynasty.
Crabs because of their characteristics, strength and perseverance have since ancient times represented people who when they grasp wealth do not let it go. In addition, their eight legs refer to the eight directions or talents, which is related to "wealth from all directions".
