Bakst Lev Samoylovich (1866, Grodno – 1924, Paris).
Artist, graphic artist, stage designer Attended the Academy of Arts as an external student, than studied in Paris under A.A. Edelfeld. He is one of the organizers and active figure of “World of Art” union. Participant in exhibitions since 1890 (the Academy of Arts, “Society of Russian aquarellists”, Union of Russian artists, “World of Art”, etc). Outstanding theater costumes maker. Arranged stagings in Paris for the troupe of S.P. Diaghilev: “Cleopatra” (1909), “Carnival” (1910), “Scheherazade” by N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov (1910), “Daphnis and Chloe” by M. Ravel (1912). In 1890-1917 worked for magazines “World of Art”, “Scales”, “Apollo”, “Epouvantail”. In 1914 got the title of Academician. Since 1917 lived and worked abroad: in Paris, Brussels, Rome, New York, London. Exhibitions of Bakst’s works were held in Paris (1906), Brussels (1910), Rome (1911). The works of the artist are exhibited in the State Tretyakov Gallery and State Russian Museum, State Central Theatre Museum named after A.A. Bakhrushin, in many regional museums, as well as in private collections in Russia and abroad
