Provenance: Vittorio Bellini (1936-2009) collection.
The Yoruba believe that the twins have inextricably linked souls. Thus, when one of two twins dies, the life of the other is in great danger. Therefore a small sculpture is required to serve as a receptacle of the soul of the deceased twin, through the ritual called 'babalawo'.
