Circle of Filippo Napoletano (1587-1629), Pair of coastal landscapes with figures and boats second half of the 17th century
second half of the 17th century
Technique: oil painting on canvas
Dimensions: 76.5 x 112 cm

The pair of marines presented here is a typical example of seventeenth-century production, evidently deduced from the compositional solutions proposed in the first half of the century by Salvator Rosa. Rosa elaborated a dramatic conception of the Mediterranean coastal landscape, built by means of angular perspective lines in which large rock formations loom over coastal stretches open on sea branches. The canvases in question describe the sea views with a rocky promontory dominated by a ruined building and trees, the group of expressive and colorful figures, and on the bottom the sea with boats. The figures of the present paintings, lively and realistic, show an evident harmony especially with the typical figures of the painting of Filippo Angeli known as Filippo Napoletano (1587-1629), a friend of Salvator Rosa, a master trained in Naples and then active in Rome and Florence. Typical of the artist are also the rather sudden variation of the color scheme, which accentuate the already incisive landscape expressiveness. The paintings in question, however, although drawing from the Neapolitan models, show less refined pictorial layout, so as to make one think of an anonymous master of the landscape painter's circle.
