Circle of Guido Cagnacci (1601-1663), Maria Maddalena second half of the 17th century
second half of the 17th century
Technique: oil painting on canvas
Dimensions: 30 x 25 cm

This canvas depicts Saint Mary Magdalene who turns her gaze to heaven. The work portrays the saint during her meditation and penance: a subject particularly widespread in the seventeenth century Counter-reformation Europe as the Magdalene was one of the clearest examples of converted sinners. The penitent Magdalene was often explicitly characterized in her sensual elements, with long hair and young and luminous complexion, in a changing balance between the sensuality of the sinner and her spiritual asceticism in repentance. The oscillation between spirituality and eroticism is clearly visible in paintings attributed to Guido Cagnacci. Cagnacci was a painter from Romagna who trained by observing the paintings of Ludovico Carracci, caravaggists and Guido Reni. In this canvas, style characters immediately show the characteristics of his manner, with the sensuality of the Bolognese school and with the chiaroscuro density of the Caravaggesque school. Even closer relationships can be found with paintings already attributed to Cagnacci, especially Mary Magdalene on canvas of the oval format, in a private collection.
