A SMALL METAL VASE AND COVER WITH POLYCHROME CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL DECORATION ATTRIBUTED TO NAMIKAWA YASUYUKI
Japan, Kyoto, Meiji period, 1875-1885 circa
The globular body supported by a circular base and surmounted by a short cylindrical neck with a domed lid and a small bud-like finial, the decoration consisting on the body of phoenixes among flowers, on the shoulder a drape on which stand out stylized animals and flowers, the lid with corollas, the enamels inserted in a very fine carpet of spiral wires.

The Victoria and Albert Museum in London preserves a small jar worked in a analogous style, with similar decorative solutions and the same choice of polychrome enamels, unsigned but attributed to Namikawa Yasuyuki's workshop (G. Irvine, Japanese Cloisonné: the Seven Treasures, London 2006 , p. 115).
Samurai by origin, Namikawa Yasuyuki (1845-1927) began his career as an artist in 1868. From 1871 to 1874 he worked in the Kyoto Shippō Kaisha, and later he opened his own business, participating with great success at the Universal Expositions of Philadelphia in 1876 and of Paris in 1878. His workshop was attended by all the foreigners who went to Kyoto, including the famous writer Rudyard Kipling who left an enthusiastic description of the works of Namikawa Yasuyuki in his From the Sea to Sea and Other Sketches (1904, pp. 387-389). Its cloisonné enamels are characterized by a superb workmanship of the metallic wires, characteristics that are well identified even in this small jar.
