A CERAMIC FUNERARY MODEL OF A STANDING MALE FIGURE WITH A GLOVE
China, Tang dynasty
The sculpture depicting a man standing on a roughly oval-shaped base, his left arm along the side slightly bent at the elbow with the fist clenched, the right one raised upwards with the hand covered by a large glove, the figure dressed alone of thong and conical hat on the head.
33,5 cm high
Provenance: Fabrizio Savi collection, acquired from Galerie Moderne, Bruxelles, between 1995 and 2000.
This representation is rather unusual in the context of the funerary statuettes (mingqi) of the Tang period. It could be a sportsman, perhaps struggling with a ball game, or a wrestler, even considering the exposure of an obvious musculature.
* The thermoluminescence carried out on 9/2/2000 from the Brussels Art Laboratory. Nuclear Section. Institut Superieur Industriel de Bruxelles confirms the proposed dating.
