MONGE GASPARD: (1746-1818) Comte de Péluse. French Mathematician, widely regarded as the inventor of descriptive geometry and the father of differential geometry. Monge served as Minister of the Marine 1792-93 during the French Revolution. Key figure in the foundation of the Ecole Polytechnique. Rare L.S., `Monge´, two pages, 4to, Paris, 8th February 1793, to citizen Bleschamp, in French. Monge, in his capacity as Minister of the Marine, states in part `I announce to you, Citizen, that I have decided and ordered that the marine gendarmes, the guards of the arsenals, and those of offices and vessels will wear the uniform as explained below…´ Monge further explains and describes the uniforms, and forbids all sorts of hats. Signed to the left border by Duval confirming the registration of this order from the Havre Marine. Monge resigned as Minister two months later. With blank integral leaf. Folded.
