BERNHARDT SARAH: (1844-1923) French stage Actress. The most prominent actress of her time. A.L.S., `Sarah Bernhardt´, two pages, 12mo, n.p., n.d., 1879, to a lady, in French. The document bears to the heading her attractive embossed monogram with her initials and the motto ''Quand Meme''. Bernhardt, in her usual difficult writing states in part `Chere Madame, les jours se passent, les mois s´écoulent; et je dis toujours, Demain? Espérant toujours que demain sera le lendemain d´hier. C´est ainsi que j´arrive a etre en retard de deux ou trois mois pour une simple réponse..´ ("Dear Madam, the days go by, the months go by; and I always say, Tomorrow? Always hoping that tomorrow will be the day after yesterday. This is how I manage to be two or three months late for a simple answer") Further saying `Je compte sur vos péchés d´oubli pour excuser les miens…´ ("I count on your sins of forgetting to excuse mine").
