NICHOLAS I OF RUSSIA: (1796-1855) Emperor of Russia 1825-55. A.L.S., `Nicolas´, one page, 4to, n.p., n, d, to Feodor Pavlovich Adelung, in French. A cleanly written youth letter by the future Tsar, referring to a present he wishes to make to his elder brother, Emperor Alexander I. Nicholas I states in part `Comme vous avez eu la bonté de me permettre de vous écrire enc as que Maman et Mr. Lamsdorf me donne la permission de faire un Cadeau d´estampes a mon frere, je vous prie de vouloir bien vous charger de cette commission…´ (“As you have been kind enough to allow me to write to you in case Mother and Mr. Lamsdorf give me permission to make a present of engravings to my brother, I beg you to undertake this commission”) With blank integral leaf. Accompanied by the original 12mo envelope addressed in Nicholas´s hand, bearing to the verso a red wax seal in good condition. VG
Feodor Pavlovich Adelung (1768-1843) Russian Historian and Bibliographer of Prussian origin. Member of the Saint Petersburg Academy of Sciences. His works marked the beginning of Russian bibliographical statistics.
