CONSTANTINE I: (1868-1923) King of Greece 1913-17 & 1920-22, he succeeded to the throne following his father´s assassination. Constantine went twice into exile. He led the Greek forces during the Balkan Wars in which Greece expanded doubling in area and population. A good L.S., `Constantin R´, two pages, mourning paper, 7.5 x 12,5, Athens, 20th April 1913, to Jose Miguel Gomez, President of the Republic of Cuba, in French. The recently appointed King of Greece informs his correspondent about his father´s assassination, stating `C´est avec la plus profonde douleur que je vous confirme la triste nouvelle de la mort de mon tres cher et vénéré Pere, Sa Majesté Georges 1er Roi des Hellenes décédé le 5/18 Mars dernier a Salonique, victime d´un odieux attentat, apres un regne prospere et Glorieux de cinquante ans´ (“It is with the deepest pain that I confirm to you the sad news of the death of my very dear and revered Father, His Majesty Georges 1st King of the Hellenes who died on March 5/18 in Salonika, victim of a heinous assassination, after a prosperous and glorious reign of fifty years”), further referring to future and saying `Appelé par l´ordre de succession au Trone de Grece, Je viens de prendre les renes du Gouvernement..´ (“Called by the order of succession to the Throne of Greece, I have just taken the reins of the Government..”) With countersignature.
