HERZL THEODOR: (1860-1904) Austro-Hungarian Jewish journalist, playwright and writer who was the father of modern political Zionism. A.L.S., Th. Herzl, one page, 8vo, n.p., 4th January 1889, to a Doctor [Hugo Wittmann?], in German. Herzl writes, 'If it's all right with you, I'll come to you this afternoon at half past three, to work a little. If my messenger doesn't find you at home, but hears that you are already in Vienna, I'll come even if I don't get an answer. The play 'The Wild Chase' has been accepted at the Burg [Theatre] and we will have to do something to submit our similar title in the proper way'. Attractively and professionally matted in pale blue and cream alongside a reproduction photograph of Herzl standing in a three-quarter length pose. 16 x 12 overall. VG

Herzl's correspondent may have been Hugo Wittmann (1839-1923) German-Austrian writer and operetta author who collaborated with Herzl on the comedy play Die Dame in Schwarz ('The Lady in Black') which received its premiere in Vienna on 6th February 1890.
