AVEDON RICHARD: (1923-2004) American fashion and portrait photographer. Signed 4 x 6 postcard, being a reproduction of his photograph entitled Nico, Sicily, originally captured in July 1947 (as stated to the verso), the image depicting a young boy standing in a cheerful three-quarter length pose with a lone tree in the background. Signed ('Avedon') by the photographer in black ink with his surname only to the verso. EX
Avedon believed his early street portrait of a young boy in Sicily was the genesis of his long fashion and portrait career, and the work has been described as 'a kind of projected self-portrait' in which 'a boy stands there, pushing forward to the front of the picture…..smiling wildly, ready to race into the future. And there, hovering behind him like a mushroom cloud, is the past in the form of a single, strange tree - a reminder of the horror that split the century into a before and after, a symbol of destruction but also of regeneration'.
