JOACHIM JOSEPH: (1831-1907) Hungarian violinist, conductor and composer. Conclusion of an A.L.S., J. Joachim, two pages, oblong 8vo, n.p., n.d., incorporating five musical quotations. Joachim suggests several Haydn quartets which could be performed, identifying each with a musical quotation of several bars, and also writing 'or the piece with “God preserve”……or any other piece that has not yet been played in March. Decide with Bargheer, because I don't remember which Haydn pieces I've played in Basel so far', further continuing 'A Bach sonata for piano…..is welcome as middle part, especially if Volkland likes to play: B minor, A major or E major. But if you want a solo, then a) Adagio by Spohr b) Sonata in G major by Tartini (Andante, Allegro, Finale). A Mozart Sonata in F major', further penning two more musical quotations of several bars each, before concluding 'or that of Strinasacchi….might be good too'. Some light uniform age toning and a couple of small, neat tears to the edges, nevertheless an attractive example featuring multiple musical quotations. About VG
Provenance: Originally acquired at a Sotheby's auction of 6th December 1991 (lot 99), the cataloguer noting that 'The musical quotations…..comprise the openings of the following works: Haydn's String Quartets, Op.76, no.5; Op.76, no.2 (“The Fifths”); Op.64, no.6; Op.33, no.3 (“The Bird”); Op.64, no.5 (“The Lark”) and Mozart's Violin Sonatas, K.377 in F major and K.304 in E minor'.
