French trepanation case ff. S. XVIII.
With trepane and different trepane heads, elevators, scalpels etc. Some instruments with wooden handles. With leather case with top metal handle.
Trepanation was a practice of neurological surgery consisting of drilling a hole in the skull to treat brain diseases. The procedure was used to relieve pressure on the brain and has been known since ancient times, with holes found in prehistoric skulls. It is still used today to treat epidural and subdural hematomas.
