DOWNING GEORGE: (c.1625-c.1684) Anglo-Irish statesman, soldier, diplomat and spymaster, after whom Downing Street (including the residence of the British Prime Minister) in London is named. Downing is also credited with being responsible, more than any other man, for arranging the acquisition of New York from the Dutch.
