PERSHING JOHN J.: (1860-1948) American General of World War I, Commander of the American Expeditionary Force on the Western Front 1917-18. War date T.L.S., John J. Pershing, one page, 8vo, Fort Bliss, Texas, 18th October 1915, to James P. Orr. Pershing explains 'Although I have tried several times to write you, it has just seemed impossible for me to do so, and I knew that you would understand' and further writes 'I greatly appreciate your expression of sympathy and I assure you that your thought of me at this time has touched me deeply. Your message has been of much comfort to me under the crushing sorrow that has come so unexpectedly into my life'. In a holograph postscript, signed a second time, Pershing writes 'I am thankful that Ann and her children were saved'. With blank integral leaf. VG Pershing's wife, Helen Frances Warren, and their three young daughters, Mary, age 3, Anne, age 7, and Helen, age 8, had all tragically died in August 1915 following smoke inhalation when a lacquered floor caught fire in the Presidio in San Francisco.
