PEPE GUGLIELMO: (1783-1855) Italian General and patriot who served in the Peninsular war. A.L.S., G. Pepe, one page, 8vo, Paris, 31st March 1849, to Gabriele Rossetti, in Italian. Pepe announces 'You are a bit heartless, my dear Rossetti. Since you left Paris you haven't written to me once to let me know about your health', and continues 'However, the bearer of this letter, Dr. Piccolo, from Sicily, will inform me….he is highly esteemed by all of us Italian expatriates, not only because of his medical expertise, but also for the loving care he gives his patients. Recently he cured General Armandi of a very serious disease, and he continually extols the doctor's skill. Since the good doctor has to spend a few months in London, I beg you to give our compatriot any assistance he may need, since he is new to that vast city. Remember that he is a most worthy doctor'. In a postscript Pepe writes 'In May we are expecting La Trollope from Florence, and she too will want to know about your health'. With integral address leaf. A letter of good association. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG Gabriele Rossetti (1783-1854) Italian nobleman, poet & scholar, founder of the secret society Carbonari. His support for Italian revolutionary nationalism forced him into political exile in England in 1821. Father of the writers and artists Maria Francesca, Dante Gabriel, William Michael and Christina Georgina Rossetti. The 'La Trollope' to whom Pepe refers is most likely to have been Fanny Trollope (1779-1863) English novelist of Domestic Manners of the Americans (1832) and mother of Anthony Trollope.
