MANDELA NELSON: (1918-2013) President of South Africa 1994-99. Nobel Peace Prize winner, 1993. An unusually large signed colour 12 x 16 photograph of Mandela in a formal head and shoulders pose. Signed ('N Mandela') in bold gold ink to the image and dated 13th May 1998 in his hand. To the verso appears an excellent note of provenance signed by a former owner of the photograph, dated at Bellville, 18th May 1998, and written in both Afrikaans and English, 'This photo was acquired for me by Lt. Llewellyn Weideman, member of Pres. Mandela's VIP security team. Weideman's wife was an employee at our firm Steyl Inc. at the time. It is signed with the President's golden ink pen and according to Weideman he only signed a limited number of photo's (sic) in this pen'.
