WALTER BRUNO : (1876-1962) German Conductor, Pianist and Composer. Walter worked closely with Gustav Mahler, and made recordings of historical significance, being widely considered one of the greatest conductors of the 20th century. An excellent A.M.Q.S., Bruno Walter, with inscription, by Walter, one page, 4to, on a page removed from an autograph album, Salzburg, August 1935, to Marina Chaliapin, in German. Walter has penned to the heading a four bars musical quote, annotating below the voice words in Italian `La ci darem la mano - la mi dirai di si´, from Mozart´s opera Don Giovanni (1787). Inscribed in bold black fountain pen ink `To the lovely Marina Schaljapin, in the honour of the Salzburg Festival and od Bruno Walter´ VG Provenance: The present page originates from the personal autograph album of Marina Chaliapin (1912-2009), the daughter of Russian opera singer Feodor Chaliapin (1873-1938), widely regarded as one of the finest bass singers of the 20th century, and his mistress Marina Petsold (1882-1964) who became the singer's second wife in 1927. Chaliapin's daughter was married to Luigi Freddi (1895-1977) the Italian journalist and politician who edited the journal Il Popolo d'Italia and who was also hugely influential in Italian political cinema in the second half of the 1930s and beginning of the 1940s.
