Colonial School. 18th century.
"Allegory of the conquest of Mexico"
Oil on canvas. 83 x 107 cm.
This interesting canvas which is in our auction depicts an idealised version of the disembarkment and conquest of Mexico by Hernán Cortes with his troops and the essential presence of La Malinche on this historic occasion .
In the background the Spanish ships arrive at the American coast with imaginary architecture. In the centre of the painting is a battle between the indigenous people and Cortes’ troops, who appear to be defending themselves from attack. The entire scene is dependent on the principal scene of the picture in which two richly dressed people appear in baroque scenery contemporary to the date at which it was painted (18th century). These people dominate the action. The masculine figure wears a 16th century style Spanish helmet and a baton, as an idealised Hernán Cortes and the feminine figure has dark hair and wears a long tunic and an exotic headdress, undoubtedly representing the conquistador’s lover, la Malinche, and her participation in the Mesoamerican conquest.
