At the age of twenty-four she took part in a singing contest in Parma and won a scholarship that allowed him to enroll at the Arrigo Boito Conservatory, where he studied under the guidance of italo brancucci. In 1938 he won the "National Singing Competition" organized the National Opera after work and was able to attend a course at the Teatro Comunale in Florence, where the support and advice of maestro Mario Labroca and teaching the tenor Amedeo Bassi the were precious. On October 27, 1938 he made his debut in Florence's La bohème, seizing suffered a resounding success. In the same year he began on the radio in a Martini & Rossi concert. Another important debut was January 29, 1942 at La Scala in The Barber of Seville, with Gianna Pederzini, Gino Bechi and Tancredi Pasero. Between 1943 and 1945, during his campaign in Italy, he sang in many concerts, performing for American and British allied troops. After the end of World War II he began to perform abroad: the June 11, 1946 debuted at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires in Tosca, flanked by his wife Pia Tassinari and January 10, 1947 with La bohème debuted at the New York Metropolitan Opera , where he performed regularly until 1954. on September 13, 1950 landed in the same work at the Royal Opera House in London, which was followed on 1 July 1951 debut at the Paris Opera with Un ballo in maschera. In 1962, after seven years of absence, he returned to the Met, where he made the last appearances in L'elisir d'amore and La bohème. He retired from the stage operatic July 21, 1970 at the Roman Theater of Benevento yet with L'elisir d'amore.
