17 × 9 × 17 cm African tribal art lukwakongo maskette from the Lega ethnic group, located in eastern Congo. Vintage wooden mask with a worn patina.
Carved out of a single block of wood which shows good signs of age, use, and exposure. As like other tribal art pieces, they do have natural abrasions and scuffs and sometimes small scrapes.The mask usually was showed during the ceremonies of the Bwami society. Advancing through the ranks within this Bwami society involved a series of initiations accompanied by gifts and payments. Lukwakongo masks are never worn on the face but are instead tied to the arm or displayed on a fence at the secret Bwami meetings.
Approx. 60 years old.
