"Our Lady of the Milk”
Sculpted and gilded alabaster relief. 21 x 16 cm.
Marvellous high-relief, which depicts the most intimate and tender moment between a mother and baby, Mary and Jesus.
This representation of Mary spread widely in the Middle Ages and even more once the Renaissance arrived.
From the late 14th century artists began to imbue their religious subjects with more feeling, either to show the suffering of Jesus, or to show us the Virgin Mary as a mother with her child. The intention was to reach the faithful through feeling and not through the fear that the severe images of previous periods transmit.
Our relief can be attributed to Bigarny, in our opinion, specifically, it has similarities to the Madonna and Child which is part of the tomb of Bishop Diego de Avellaneda.
