Burgos school from the 16th century. Circle of Felipe Bigarny (Langres, France, c. 1475 - Toledo, 1543). Saint Bartholomew. Sculpture in wood carved, polychrome and gilded. According to the tradition Saint Bartholomew was one of the apostles who accompanied Jesus of Nazareth, he evangelized Mesopotamia, India and Armenia, where he was martyred, being skinned alive by order of the monarch and then beheaded. The saint is represented with a long robe and mantle typical of his condition as an Apostle of Jesus, he holds an open book in his left hand, a symbol of his evangelization and the demon at his feet, whom he holds with a chain. . The origin of this symbol has its origin in the apocryphal gospels, Saint Bartholomew requires the risen Christ to show him the evil Belial, after showing him, Jesus orders him to "Step on his neck and ask him." It must have been part of an altarpiece bench or attached to a flat niche due to the flat shape of the back and its shallow depth. 83 x 34 x 18 cm.
