German school of the 14th-15th century. Piety. Sculpture in sculpted alabaster. At the end of the Middle Ages a theme was developed that would have a wide later repercussion: Pieta. In it the Virgin appears picking up the body of the dead Christ on her legs. Without direct reference to the canonical gospels, its origin would have to be traced to the female convents in the Rhine area around the 14th century. Thus, small, highly expressive terracotta sculptures called Vesperbild were created (alluding to the Vespers of Good Friday, the canonical hour in which Christ was freed from the cross and placed in the arms of his Mother). From this origin the theme spread throughout the rest of Europe as it connected perfectly with the spirit of Modern Devotion that dominated the 15th century and was adopted by the passionate brotherhoods that flourished at the end of the Middle Ages, later becoming an image. frequently used for funeral chapels. The idea of motherhood was united in her with that of death, referring, in addition, to the protective character of Mary (and therefore, linked to the Virgin of Mercy) who acted as an intercessor between men and the divinity. To highlight a similar example preserved in the Museum of Decorative Arts in Frankfurt. 21 x 19 x 6 cm.
