"Manuel Fernández Varela"
Oval miniature painted on ivory, Rajada. With gilt bronze frame, with bow top and back foot.
Manuel Fernández Varela (El Ferrol 1772-Madrid 1834) illustrious ecclesiastical, was admitted to the Royal Academy of History in 1802, was appointed Prior of Acora and Dean of the See of Lugo. In Madrid he was honorary auditor of the Tribunal de la Rota in 1817. Consultant theologian and synodial examiner of the Nunciature and General Commissioner of the Crusade in 1824. In 1827 he was decorated with the Cross of Carlos III that appears in this portrait.
Copy of the original portrait painted by Vicente López in 1828, which is in the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid (with minor differences). According to the General Inventory of the Royal Possession of the Vista Alegre Palace carried out in 1845, Queen María Cristina had miniatures of this character made by Nicolás García and his son Sergio, forming part of her excellent collection. Two examples of miniatures with this character can be found in the Museum of Romanticism and in the Lázaro Galdiano Foundation.
