Close-up is a beautiful etching on paper, realized by the French artist Henri-Clarles Guérard (Paris, 1846-1897), after Paul Berthon and printed by Charles Delaitre, as the inscription etched on the lower margin reports with the year "1872". Inspired by some Art-Nouveau female portrait by Berthon, this wonderful close-up of a woman from behind is in excellent conditions, except for some minor stains above all on the edges of the sheet. Henri Charles Guérard (Paris, 1846-1897) The French artist, etcher, and lithographer began engraving in 1870, under the protection of Nicolas Berthon. Friend of Manet, he attended the salon of Nina de Villard. He posed for Manet for the painting titled Au Café, alongside the actress Ellen Andrée. Manet greatly appreciated his engraving work, considering it the only one of high quality. He married in 1879 Eva Gonzales, a painter, pupil, model, and friend of Manet. In 1881, he engraved the work of his father-in-law Emmanuel Gonzales The Caravans of Scaramouche. In 1883, Guérard participated in Art Japon by Louis Gonse, published by Albert Quantin. In April, he published Japonisme, an album of ten etchings by Edmond Sagot. In 1889, with his friend Félix Bracquemond, he created the Society of French Painters-Engravers, which exhibited at the Galerie Durand-Ruel.
